Claire Sakiyama

Claire Sakiyama is a full-time hospitalist physician working in Vancouver BC. Born into a musical family in Victoria, she grew up playing a number of instruments before shifting her time to athletics, specifically basketball. She attended McGill University in Montreal for her undergraduate studies with a focus on International Development and Physiology. She was grateful to return to Victoria for her medical studies as part of the Island Medical Program at UBC. Claire continued her medical education at UBC for residency and completed her Family Medicine residency in the Northern Medical Program in 2019. She began her career as a locum family doctor in rural and remote communities throughout the province and gained experience working in clinics, hospitals and ERs.

Upon moving to Vancouver with her now husband, Claire discovered her love of Hospitalist Medicine and was grateful to join the VGH group. She particularly enjoys the interdisciplinary nature of her work and seeks out opportunities to collaborate with her nursing and allied health colleagues to improve patient care.

Claire recently became a mother, welcoming a son in the summer of 2024. When not working in the hospital, you can find her and her family on dog friendly trails with their pitbull Juniper.
